Common Questions

Are these tools really free? Do I need an account?
Completely free, no account needed. Enter a ZIP code and get your results — no email gate, no ads inside the tools. They’re built for gardeners, not lead generation.
Where does the data come from?
Zone data is from the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (2023). Frost dates come from NOAA’s 30-year Climate Normals (1991–2020). Both are the official government datasets serious references rely on.
What’s the difference between my zone and my frost dates?
Your hardiness zone tells you which perennials survive winter — use it for trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers. Your frost dates tell you when your annual growing season starts and ends — use them for vegetable timing.
My ZIP code isn’t returning results — what now?
A few new, PO-box-only, or rural ZIPs aren’t in the datasets. Try a neighboring ZIP, or check the official USDA map directly.
Can I embed these tools on my own site?
Please link to them rather than embed — a link gives your readers the full tool plus the guide content. A simple link like “use the OGW frost dates tool” is perfect.
From the OGW Team

We built these because the questions that stump gardeners most aren’t about what to grow — they’re about when. Those have specific, calculable answers, and we got tired of watching gardeners guess.

We’re adding new tools throughout 2026. If there’s a calculation you keep doing by hand, tell us in the comments and we’ll prioritize it. Happy growing!
